Kendall Fuqua
Founder and Senior Stylist/Colorist
From the moment Kendall picked up his first pair of scissors, he saw a career in hair as more than a craft. It was a way to connect with people, give voice to his creativity and grow a business around making people feel and look good. Born and raised in Roxboro, N.C., Kendall attended Troutman’s College in Wilmington to learn to cut, style and color hair. Upon graduation, he worked with a series of companies, including Sebastian Hot Tools, Fromm Shears, and Jon Renau, as an educator, consultant, guest artist and platform artist, before opening his own salon in Wilmington 30 years ago.
He bought a 5,500-square foot, midtown property on Floral Parkway and built a 26-chair, comfortably chic salon. Twelve years ago, he turned an adjacent building into a separate salon for his hair restoration business. Both salons have plenty of wall space to display Kendall’s own acrylic paintings and those of other local artists. Kendall’s art, another important expression of his creativity, explodes with color and texture. He enjoys regularly donating his paintings for charity event auctions in and around Wilmington.
In fact, giving back is a constant theme for Kendall. He is well known for mentoring cosmetology students and new graduates. Many of his staff have been trained by him and continue to see him as their creative muse.
Kendall, most of all, loves to help his clients find cuts and colors that best express their individuality and lifestyle. He truly listens and cares about the vision clients have for themselves and is a waterfall of new ideas and solutions as warranted. When clients sit in his chair in the salon, they are guaranteed a meticulous cut and expert styling, along with good old-fashioned fun and lively conversation.
